Clark had to use black Kryptonite to merge them back together again. As a result, the real Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) was left without any of his negative traits, and the other was pure evil. An experiment with it caused Lex’s dark side to emerge as a separate entity. In the same season, it was learned that it can alter humans too (not just Kryptonians).

Armed with a piece of black Kryptonite, Martha “split” him in two, allowing his human side to battle it out with his Kryptonian side. In the Smallville season 4 premiere, the series introduced black Kryptonite, which was new to the world of Superman. Most of these exist in DC Comics, as Superman’s comic book counterpart has had similar troubles with various forms of Kryptonite. Since then, Clark and his friends have come across multiple different colors of Kryptonite, with each one having a different effect on Kryptonians. Apparently, while green Kryptonite affects him physically, the red Kryptonite affects him emotionally. An explanation came when Pete (Sam Jones III) discovered that the class ring was made from red meteor rocks. After buying a class ring, Clark experienced a sudden personality change, and it took a while for anyone to understand why. Smallville season 2 revealed that green isn’t the only form of Kryptonite. In the beginning of the series, Clark (Tom Welling) realized that the green meteor rocks render him sick and are capable of killing him. It was featured in a handful of episodes, and also played a key role in Clark’s plan to deal with Doomsday in the Smallville season 8 finale.
